Physical Exams for Cats & Dogs

When it comes to maintaining good health long term, routine exams are just as important for cats and dogs as they are for people.

When combined with regular vaccinations, parasite prevention and proper nutrition, regular physical checkups give your pet the best chance at good long-term health.

Visiting the vet regularly for checkups allows us to prevent health problems from developing in your pet, or to catch them in their earliest and most treatable stages.

What to Expect During Your Pet's Exam

Your pet will undergo a thorough examination so that the vet can get a complete picture of their overall health and condition. This will include the following components:

General Condition

We will start the examination by looking at your pet's general demeanor and bodily condition: how they walk and stand, whether they are alert, and whether they have a healthy body weight.

Coat & Skin

We will examine your pet's skin and coat for signs of problems, such as dryness or oiliness, dandruff, abnormal hair loss/shedding, lumps or bumps.

Face & Head

Your pet's nose, eyes, and ears will be examined for any discharge or abnormalities. We'll look at the mouth for signs of oral health problems like plaque buildup or periodontal disease.

Internal Health

We will check the heart and pulse to ensure the heart rate and rhythm are normal, and that the blood pressure is normal as well. We will also check the lungs for evidence of abnormal breathing.

The lymph nodes will be examined for swelling and/or pain.

We'll also examine the abdomen to ensure that the bladder, kidneys, liver, intestines, spleen and stomach all feel normal, and that there are no signs of discomfort.

Puppies & Kittens

Puppies and kittens need to get off to a good start with proper medical attention in the early weeks.

We’ll start your new buddy with a complete physical examination, puppy or kitten immunizations, testing for intestinal parasites, and deworming. We'll also give you a puppy or kitten kit with samples and loads of educational material to help you care for your new family member.

Please never hesitate to ask us any questions you have about caring for your new pet, both during your appointment or over the phone.

Once the initial appointment is complete, we'll see you back periodically for the required booster shots.

Seniors

Senior pets are living longer than ever these days, due to advances in medical knowledge, newer therapies, and better nutrition.

As your pet grows older, regular evaluations become increasingly important for ensuring their health and longevity.

In addition to the routine wellness procedures we perform on adult animals, senior pets will receive special attention to age-related issues such as arthritis or decreased vision. Additional laboratory tests will also help you assess your pet’s overall health.

Vaccinations & Prevention

During your pet's exam, the vet will also determine whether they are due for any of their routine vaccinations, or if they require preventive care.
